Vox Books Adventure for Autistic Children

Vox Books Adventure for Autistic Children

By: Eboni A. Weston

My son, Aaron loves the sound effects from the story Jabari Jumps. At first, I was reading normal picture books to Aaron, but Aaron wasn’t listening and would walk away. So, I decided to check out the Vox Book, Jabari Jumps at the Oakland Public Library: Elmhurst Branch with my library card. When I arrived at home, I showed the Vox book Jabari Jumps to Aaron and then I turned on the device. Immediately, Aaron listened to the story and was smiling. The best part was that Aaron listened to the whole story and when the story ended, Aaron wanted to listen to the story again. This Vox Book, Jabari Jumps has amazing sound effects of the splashing sound of the water inside the swimming pool. This Vox Book has enhanced rhythmic sounds and show movement of words that bring out the story which helps my son to stay in engaged throughout the story.

Aaron, my son is a huge fan of trains. I was browsing around on the Oakland Public Library LIS system, and I found this Vox Book about Trains. I placed a hold on this Vox Book and check it out with my library card. When my son arrived home, I showed Aaron this Vox Book about trains, Aaron smiled with excitement. This Vox Book has realistic sounds of trains. My son loved the sounds of trains. Most importantly, my son learned about different trains and sounds of different trains and at the same time, my son was learning about several types of trains as well as learning about distinct functions of trains. My son stayed in engaged throughout the whole story.

Aaronis a huge fan of Pete the Cat. I was extremely happy when the Oakland Public Library had the Vox Book, Pete the Cat, The Peters Go Marching available for check out. I at once placed this book on hold and then check out this Vox Book with my library card. When I arrived at home, Aaron was thrilled with happiness when he saw this Vox Book. Immediately, Aaron sat next to me on the couch. I opened the book and turned on the device. The audio storyteller was singing The Peters Go Marching One by One song. Aaron loved the song. Aaron loved the sound effects. Aaron stayed engaged within the entire story.

In conclusion, Vox Books are the reason my son loves books. My son Aaron was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of 2 years old. Now, my son is 10 years old, in the 4th grade and love Vox Books. Vox books helped my son enjoy books from different genres. Thank you, Vox Books, for helping my son to stay engaged in books and enjoy the stories.
