ACL INSTITUTE DRAWS A LARGE CROWD
ACL held its first in-person Institute since the pandemic on April 11, 2025, drawing approximately 130 attendees to the San Francisco Main Library. The focus was on movement and music in storytime, entitled “We Got the Beat!”

Membership – Celia Jackson
The all-day event began with a celebration of ACL’s 90TH anniversary. ACL began in 1935 to assist youth service librarians with professional development, including book selection. We had several longtime members attend, including Diana Colby who joined in 1967, and Lifetime member Linda Perkins, who joined around that same time. The celebration was spear-headed by our membership chair Celia Jackson, who brought joy and energy to our event!

Melanie Demore
Speakers on movement and music in storytime included author JaNay Brown-Wood, Jamaica Stevens from Jameroo Kids, Drag Queen storytime performer Per Sia, and vocal teacher Melanie DeMore. There were also breakout sessions on yoga, ukelele, American Sign Language, and using movement to increase literacy.

Special thanks to our Institute chair Lillian Whithaus, our president Shani Boyd, and Kimberly Lauer who facilitated our use of San Francisco Public Library’s meeting space for this event. You can access our Institute bibliography of resources here: ACL Institute Bib2025.docx – Google Drive.
