DIY: “How to Train Your Dragon”

DO IT YOURSELF PROGRAMMING:

“How to Train Your Dragon”

The film “How to Train Your Dragon” is an award-winning animated feature film that inspired two sequels. It is based on a tween novel of the same title, written by Cressida Cowell. Because it appeals to a wide age range and is still popular, it is a great choice for a library movie showing and program.

This film fits any time of year and would work well with a book discussion group. As with any public library film showing, you will need a movie license. Find more information at www.swank.com .

Refreshments

Toothless the Dragon loves fish, so serve fish crackers, Swedish fish gummies, and water.

Crafts

How to Train Your Dragon Bookmarks: https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/119696/how-to-train-your-dragon-bookmarks/ .  These fun but simple bookmarks are made from craft foam and popsicle sticks.

Playdough: https://kidsactivitiesblog.com/56341/tame-dragon-play-dough/ .  Make this homemade playdough.

Shields:  Make Viking shields out of plastic plates, decorated with markers.

Viking Helmets: https://www.queen-of-theme-party-games.com/HOW-TO-TRAIN-YOUR-DRAGON-PARTY-GAMES.html .  Make these Viking Helmets of out paper.

Dragons: How To Train your Dragon Toothless Toilet Paper Roll Craft – The Keeper of the Cheerios. Make these Toothless dragons out of toilet paper rolls and black construction paper.

Games

Catapults:  https://www.queen-of-theme-party-games.com/HOW-TO-TRAIN-YOUR-DRAGON-PARTY-GAMES.html .  Make these small catapults from popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and a plastic spoon.  Then have players fling balls of foil and see who can go the farthest.

Toothless Toss: Make a cardboard face of Toothless the Dragon, with the mouth cut out.  Toss cotton balls at the mouth, to represent the sheep that are fed to dragons.

Put Out the Fire:  Make flames out of construction paper and attach to a bookend – these are the targets. Place bookend targets on the ground.  Have player stand six feet away from the targets, and toss water balloons. If they hit the target, they win a prize.

Fish Race:  Have players transfer fish crackers from one dish to another by using a straw. Player inhales to get the cracker to stick to the straw while it is being moved.

Pin the Tail on the Dragon:  Repurpose a Pin the Tail on the Donkey game using a large picture of Toothless the dragon.
