
2019 Boston Globe – Horn Book Awards Announced
The Boston Globe – Horn Book Awards were announced on May 29, 2019. The awards were first presented in 1967; this year’s eligible books were published between June 2018 and May 2019 in the U.S. and can be written or illustrated by citizens of any country. There was a winner and two honor books in each category:
Picture Books
Winner: The Patchwork Bike by Maxine Beneba Clarke, illustrated by Van Thanh Rudd, (Candlewick).
Honor books: Dreamers written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales, (Neal Porter/Holiday House), and We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga, by Traci Sorell, illustrated by Frane Lessac, (Charlebridge).
Fiction and Poetry
Winner: The Season of Styx Malone by Kekla Magoon, (Wendy Lamb/Random).
Honor books: Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram, (Dial/Penguin), and On the Come Up by Angie Thomas, (Balzer+Bray/HarperCollins).
Nonfiction
Winner: This Promise of Change: One Girl’s Story in the Fight for School Equality by Jo Ann Allen Boyce and Debbie Levy, (Bloomsbury).
