Preschool Storytime Ideas

Shadows

Recently, PUBYAC listserv had suggestions for doing a storytime about Shadows.  Here are some of their ideas:

    Books
Charlip, Remy.  MOTHER, MOTHER, I FEEL SICK.
    Asch, Frank. BEAR SHADOW.
    Freeman, Don.  GREGORY'S SHADOW.
    Hoban, Tana.  SHADOWS AND REFLECTIONS.
Narahashi, Keiko.  I HAVE A FRIEND.
    Stevenson, Robert Louis.  MY SHADOW.
Balian, Lorna.  GARDEN FOR A GROUNDHOG.
Kroll, Steven.  It's Ground Hog Day!
    Anno, Mitsumasa.  IN SHADOWLAND.
Dorros, Arthur.  MY AND MY SHADOW.
Farber, Norma.  RETURN OF THE SHADOWS.
    Morrison, Vicky.  SO SHY.
Berge, Claire.  WHOSE SHADOW IS THIS? A LOOK AT ANIMAL SHAPES
    Chorao, Kay.  SHADOW NIGHT.
    Swinburne, Stephen.  GUESS WHOSE SHADOW?
    Bartolos, Michael.  SHADOWVILLE.
    Inkpen, Mick.  KIPPER'S MONSTER.
    Robison, Nancy.  TEN TALL SOLDIERS.
    Roth, Susan.  CREAK, THUMP, BONK.
Seuss, Dr.  THE SHAPE OF ME AND OTHER STUFF.
Tompert, Ann.  NOTHING STICKS LIKE A SHADOW.
Shaw, Charles.  IT LOOKED LIKE SPILT MILK.
    Daly, Niki.  PAPA LUCKY'S SHADOW.
    Schertle, Alice.  WILLIAM AND GRANDPA.
    Dunbar, Fiona.  YOU'LL NEVER GUESS.

    Activities
Shadow Hunt: give kids flashlights and dim the lights so they can create shadows with objects in the room.

Whose Shadow: ahead of time, cut out the "shadow" of objects on black  construction paper and put it on other paper, and ask kids to identify what the shadow belongs to.

Shadow Puppets:  if you don't have a shadow puppet stage with lamp, you can use an overhead projector to project the figures onto a blank wall. The kids love it because it's something they
wouldn't normally see very often. Perform a well-known song like "Old MacDonald" or a story like "Three Billy Goats Gruff" that translate well into shadow figures.

    Songs
"See My Shadow"  (to the tune of Frere Jacques)
    See my shadow (2x);
    Move this way (2x).
    Doing things that I do (2x);
Follow me, he seems to say.
    Shadow, Shadow
Shadow, Shadow, Turn Around  Reach for Your Shadow
Shadow, shadow, turn around. Reach for the sun,
Shadow, shadow, touch the ground. Wiggle your toes,
Shadow, shadow, dance on your toes. Stick out you tongue
Shadow, shadow, touch your nose. And touch your nose.
Shadow, shadow, jump up now. Hop like a bunny,
Shadow, shadow, take a bow. Flap like a bird,
Shadow, shadow, stomp your feet. Quiet as a mouse now....
Shadow, shadow, take a seat. Don't say a word!

    Crafts
Make stick puppets. Use the outline of a person on which the child could color in clothes, face or glue on a pair of pants and a shirt--using very
simple pieces.  They could add some yarn for hair. Then have them attach the same outline on another stick, but this time cut the outline in black construction paper to serve as the shadow.
