Irma Simonton Black Award and Cook Prize Announced: The Bank Street Center for Children’s Literature announced two children’s book awards in May 2026.

The Irma Black Award was given to Don’t Trust Fish by Neil Sharpson, illustrated by Dan Santat, and published by Dial. The award is voted on by first and second graders. Three silver medalists were also named: The Peanut Man by Carmen Agra Deedy, illustrated by Raul Colon, Peachtree; Evelyn Witch Gets a Pet by Beth Ferry, illustrated by Charles Santoso, Roaring Brook; and Worm Makes a Sandwich by Brianne Farley, Penguin.

The Cook Prize goes to the best STEM picture book and is voted on by third and fourth graders. The winner was Jason Chin for Hurricane, Neal Porter/Holiday House. Three silver medalists were named: Plight of the Pelican: How Science Saved a Species by Jessica Stremer, illustrated by Gordy Wright, Holiday House; Rewriting the Rules: How Dr. Kathleen Friel Created New Possibilities for Brain Research and Disability by Danna Zeiger, illustrated by Josee Bisaillon, Millbrook; and We Carry the Sun by Tae Keller, illustrated by Rachel Wada, Norton.
