Preschool Storytime Ideas

Ladybugs

Here are more ideas for storytime themes to go along with the summer reading program for 2008, Catch the Reading Bug.

For a ladybug craft, there are several choices. If you can buy red paper plates, the kids can add black construction paper dots, eyes, and antennae. Check out http://www.daniellesplace.com/html/ladybugcrafts.htm for several craft ideas, including ladybug hats, pencil toppers, and rock creatures.

Those titles marked T will be suitable for a Toddler Storytime as well as the traditional preschool storytime.

Brown, Ruth. LADYBUG, LADYBUG. T
A ladybug runs into various animals while she is rushing home to see her children.

Carle, Eric. THE GROUCHY LADYBUG.
This ladybug picks a fight with each animal she sees, including a whale. There is also a lesson on telling time in the story.

Conklin, Gladys. LUCKY LADYBUGS.
In this factual story with watercolor illustrations, the reader can learn about ladybugs.

O'Malley, Kevin. LITTLE B UGGY RUNS AWAY. T
Told in dialogue balloons and deeply saturated full color paintings, a little ladybug runs away from home but is afraid when night comes.

Dahl, Michael. LOTS OF LADYBUGS: COUNTING BY FIVES. T
As the title indicates, this book helps children learn to count by fives, but it also has a story about ladybugs.

Gerth, Melanie. TEN LITTLE LADYBUGS. T
Listeners will get practice in counting backwards in this book with tactile ladybugs.

Finn, Isobel. THE VERY LAZY LADYBUG. T
A ladybug rides on a dog and other animals, but doesn't learn to fly until she is forced to.
