Preschool Storytime Ideas

Doughnuts

Two new picture books both talk about doughnuts - which is my favorite food. So I looked for other books on the tasty treat and was surprised to see how many there are - enough for a preschool storytime so long as the food police don't protest. Many of us remember the out-of-control doughnut machine in HOMER PRICE by Robert McCloskey; it is still a great readaloud to primary graders. You could even expand the them to include shapes, especially things that are in a circle shape.
Kids could decorate paper doughnuts with glitter, or could make a wreath craft: Ahead of time, have a volunteer cut out the inner circle of a paper plate so you end up with a wreath. Then, the kids trace their hands, and cut out the hands and glue them onto the wreath. Or, glue on small, squished up squares of colored tissue paper for a simple wreath. Add cut-out letters spelling our “Welcome” or the child's name so it can serve as a door decoration.
