SPRING BOARD BOOK ROUND-UP, PART II

SPRING BOARD BOOK ROUND-UP, PART II

New Board Books

Cousins, Lucy. Little Fish’s Ocean. Candlewick, 03/2022. [10p.] $9.99. 978-1-5362-1685-1.
A rhyming text and gatefold flaps combine for a solid story on undersea life, featuring Cousins’ popular Little Fish character. The rhyme describes what is in the deeply saturated full color cartoon artwork, although there are more fish and animals in the illustrations along with those mentioned in the text. The flaps are very sturdy, so this should hold up to library circulation.

Laties-Davis, Claire. Merriam-Webster’s 150 First Words. Illus. by Kasia Dudziuk. Merriam-Webster, 10/2021. [24p.] $10.99. 978-0-87779-117-1.
Combining a story with small photos captioned with one or two words make this more than a toddler dictionary. The story shows different toddlers on each spread as the go throughout their day, from waking up, to getting dressed, to eating breakfast, and so on. The small photos show various items relating to what is happening in the story, such as items of clothing, that a parent can use to create a dialogue when reading to a child.  The full color graphic-style illustrations depict toddlers of different racial identities and with different caregivers including moms, dads, grandparents, and teachers. This oversized board book is the size of an average picture book, and should be popular, as well as useful.

Nosy Crow. Sometimes Babies…A Book for a New Baby. Illus. by Charlotte Trounce. Nosy Crow, 04/2022. [18p.] $9.99. 978-1-5362-2405-4.
In this rhyming book of opposites, various animals and their offspring are shown to demonstrate the concept. For example, a penguin parent and baby depict “Sometimes babies can be short…” while a giraffe parent and child show “and sometimes they are tall.” The full color graphic artwork is perfect for babies and toddlers, who will be able to guess some of the animals in the illustrations. The story ends with a mylar mirror. This contains both a positive message and a fun lesson on opposites.

Board Books Based on Picture Books

Prasadam-Halls, Smriti. Welcome to Your World. Illus. by Jaime Kim. Candlewick, 03/2022. [30p.] $9.99. 978-1-5362-2411-5.
A rhyming text describes various things for baby to observe and love about the world: “Look up at the sky. Can you see the sun? Feel its kiss upon your check – morning has begun.” Each spread shows an animal with offspring in the setting described in the rhyme, including the forest, ocean, and snow. The watercolor illustrations are very well done, showing a realistic environment and animals; the first and last spread show a human parent and child. Originally released as a picture book version in 2020, this board version makes a nice gift but libraries will find more use in the picture book edition.

New Series

“Little Life Cycles” by Maggie Li. Templar, 03/2022. [26p.] $9.99 each.
Drip. 978-1-5362-2388-0
Seed. 978-1-5362-2387-3.
Each of these board books focuses on a scientific concept that a young preschooler will be able to understand.  Seed explains how an apple seed (or “pip”) is spread throughout a large area, and Drip depicts the water cycle. The text is straightforward; the drip moves into the river, then the ocean, then a cloud, and then rains back on to the land. The seed drops on the ground, is eaten by a bird, then is “pooped” out by the bird and flies in the wind before it finally lands and grows. The full color graphic artwork shows what the text describes, and each book has a die-cut hole that shows the title concept throughout the story. A solid science series for young children.
