Following up our previous post, here are some more reports from our members on their recent ALA Conference experiences.
Many of us attended the “I Want a Truck Book! Reorganizing Your Picture Book Collection to Meet the Needs of Young Patrons and Their Caregivers” (reported on in the previous post), and it stands out as one of the most valuable presentations – both Amy Martin and Eric Barbus mentioned it at our recent ACL meeting. Mary Ann Scheuer’s thoughts on the program can be found on her blog: http://greatkidbooks.blogspot.com/ (scroll down) and on the ALSC blog: http://www.alsc.ala.org/blog/2012/07/ala12-i-want-a-truck-book-reorganizing-your-picture-book-collection/.
Claire Scott found a program that really resonated – “Passive Programming That’s Anything But.” The Passive Programming presentation talked about simple and easy programs you can have in your library to draw in teens, with casual things they can do without a staff member having to lead them. Just leave the materials at a table, and as teens visit they library, they will engage with the materials. See the powerpoint explaining the program at: http://prezi.com/h82rji6ukbss/passive-programming-thats-anything-but-reaching-teens-subversively/ and handout here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OBGwr9qm39WZ8s-l9tTNB5uNbQTC-Cel_G43X53RNq8/edit?pli=1 .
Kathy Haug and Odette Batis attended the preconference “Disney’s Approach to Quality Service,” finding several things to take back and implement to improve library customer service. Ideas included the fact that it is everyone’s job to pick up trash or litter when you see it.
Helen Bloch did a poster session “Check Out Science in the Library: How Library Kits Help Families Share Science.” Find the program description at this link, and scroll down to find the helpful handout: http://ala12.scheduler.ala.org/node/2503 .
Several members attended the program “There’s an App for That: Using Technology to Enhance Children’s Librarianship.” The handouts and powerpoint slides for that are available at: http://ala12.scheduler.ala.org/node/747 .
Finally, for many ACL members the highlight of the Conference was the ALSC Distinguished Service Award given to Linda Perkins. Here is the Youtube recording of the event and Linda’s gracious acceptance speech: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbs3DAG5kuw .
