ACL Meeting Friday, July 11, 2014: Just a quick reminder for our Bay Area members! Please join us for our ACL Meeting on Friday, July 11, 2014, from 9am-Noon at the Oakland Main Library. We will have our usual Book Reviewing and sharing of Distinguished Books. There will also be a brief time to share updates from the ALA Conference, held last week in Las Vegas. Don’t be late, this is a shortened meeting to make room for the children’s lunch program. For more information, see: www.bayviews.org/calendar.html#meetings
ALSC Book Award Acceptance Speeches: Always a highlight, the speeches for the ALSC Awards on Monday morning drew a packed crowd. You can read the speeches as PDF files here: www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia .
Common Core IRL: In Real Libraries: Four librarians, including ACL’s Mary Ann Scheuer (http://greatkidbooks.blogspot.com/), described how they assist teachers looking for books that fit the Common Core standards. The lively presentation featured a wealth of great books, which served as examples of what to look for and how the book linked to the standards. I really appreciated that discussion on the types of nonfiction styles used, such as narrative, expository, etc. Check out these links for the presentation’s powerpoint, and booklists:
