Performers’ Showcase, Morris Award Finalists, Programming Course

ACL Performers’ Showcase in the Bay Area: Come see over thirty children’s AnansiTurtleperformers, all in one day, all in one place! Presented annually for more than 20 years, by the Association of Children’s Librarians of Northern California, this is a great day of entertainment that will run from 9am til 4:30pm, with a break for lunch.

Tickets are now available for ACL’s 2015 Performer’s Showcase! This year’s event will be held on February 7, 2015, at the Fremont Main Library (CA).

For more details and to purchase tickets, visit the event page: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/975750.

GabiMorris Award Finalists: The 2015 finalists for the William C. Morris YA Debut Award were announced recently. Started in 2009 to honor the late HarperCollins children’s book vice president, this award recognizes achievement for a first-time author who has written a book for tweens and teens. Check out this website for information on the five finalists:
www.ala.org/yalsa/morris-award?utm_source=YALSA+Members_Updated_June+2014&utm_campaign=33f517929d-YALSA_December_2012_E_News3_9_2012&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_c641a596eb-33f517929d-81543697 . And congratulations to ACL member Carla Riemer, who is part of the award committee.

Heavy Medal Blog: Please check out Nina Lindsay’s post to her Mock Newbery blog “Heavy Medal” – http://blogs.slj.com/heavymedal/2014/12/01/how-we-think-we-read/. It is a very thoughtful take on how children’s librarians/book reviewers can look at books from nonwhite authors and illustrators.

Homework HelpChildren’s Programming on a Budget Infopeople Course: Need new ideas for low-cost children’s library programming? Or are you relatively new to the responsibility of offering library programs for school-age children? Check out this new Infopeople Course, “Children’s Programming on a Budget” – https://infopeople.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=446 . Taught by Penny Peck (another ACL member), this course will include information on creative Do-it-Yourself special events, movie showings, book clubs, game programs, Makers’ programming, and a variety of other library programs for youth.
