Pet Shows

Many libraries will be planning a pet show for this summer, in conjunction with the 2006 Summer Reading Program, “Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales.” Here are some great picture books about pet shows. Be sure to sing “B-I-N-G-O” and other animals songs! For a craft, you can you can make “blue ribbons” to give out to all the attendees, or make dog or cat paperbag puppets.

Keats, Ezra Jack.  PET SHOW!
Kids from the neighborhood all when a prize, from the brightest goldfish, to the busiest ants, to Archie's germ in a glass jar.  Libraries may want to model their pet shows after this one since everyone walks away a winner!

Gwynne, Fred.  EASY TO SEE WHY.
The audience will chant "easy to see why," which is repeated throughout this story concerning dogs who resemble their owners.

Graham, Margaret.  BENJI AND HIS FRIEND FIFI.
Fifi the poodles runs off while getting groomed for the pet show, but neighbor mutt Benji runs after her.

Cooper, Melrose.  PETS!
A rhyming celebration of pets includes "Sleek pets, slick pets, do-amazing-tricks pets."

Capucilli, Alyssa.  BISCUIT WINS A PRIZE.
In this very easy reader, Biscuit is entered in his first dog show.

Fry, Sonali.  BOB THE BUILDER:  BEST IN SHOW.
Can a cat win a dog show?  Based on the popular TV series for preschoolers.
