The Dorothy Helfeld Scholar Committee is happy to announce the two librarians chosen for this honor! Committee chair Celia Jackson will be introducing our two new scholars at the September 2024 meeting. The scholars receive a one year free membership to ACL as well as free entrance to the ACL Performers’ Showcase and the ACL Institute. Our scholars will be trained on how to write book reviews and experience the wealth of professional development opportunities offered to all ACL members. Here are our two new ACL Scholars:
Jennifer (or Jen) Crain
I’m Jennifer (or Jen) Crain, and I am excited to be a part of ACL. I have taught elementary school for over 12 years with a masters in education, and currently going back for a second masters, MLIS at SJSU. I will graduate in May. I am currently working at Fremont Main Library as a circulation clerk, on the way towards becoming a children’s librarian. Outside of school and work, I obviously enjoy reading, especially middle grade books, adult mysteries and psychological thrillers. I also enjoy quilting, gardening, and watching European handball and soccer.
Alva Fong
I’m a forever library kid and a Sesame Street kid at heart. Thanks, Mom, for the greatest gift: teaching me to read early and our weekly walks to the neighborhood library. Thanks, Dad, for being my bookworm role model. I believe in the limitless power of representation and storytelling! I’m a Contra Costa library aide and a first-year student in the SJSU MLIS program. I want to become the librarian I needed as an undiagnosed neurodivergent Chinese American girl. I aim to create welcoming, safe spaces that inspire children to love reading and become lifelong learners. I am honored to be chosen as a 2024/2025 Dorothy Helfeld Scholar. Thank you so much!
