I’m Sick/Get Well Storytime

Ready for cold and flu season? How about a storytime on getting sick, and getting well! Here are some great ideas:

BOOKS

Charlip, Remy.  MOTHER, MOTHER, I FEEL SICK.  With illustrations that look like a shadow play, the doctor removes strange things from the patient’s stomach.

Keller, Holly.  WHEN FRANCIE WAS SICK.  Holly is sick, and has to stay home from school.

Cherry, Lynne.  WHO’S SICK TODAY? A rhyming story featuring different animals with various ailments.

Sachar, Louis.  MONKEY SOUP.  When her Dad gets sick, a little girl makes him “monkey soup.”

Shannon, David.  A BAD CASE OF STRIPES.  Camilla wakes one more covered in bright colored stripes – not on her clothing but on her skin!

Bemelmans, Ludwig.  MADELINE.  The classic about the little girl who must have her appendix out.

Dealey, Erin.  GOLDIE LOCK HAS CHICKEN POX.  Her illness prevents Goldie Locks from visiting her friends Red Ridinghood and Little Bo Peep.

Wilson, Karma.  BEAR FEELS SICK.  Bear is too sick to play, so his friends come to his cave and make him soup and tea.

Wells, Rosemary.  FELIX FEELS BETTER.  Felix doesn’t feel well but a visit to Dr. Duck makes him feel better.

Singer, Marilyn.  SOLOMON SNEEZES.  Solomon’s sneeze has the impact of gale force winds!

CRAFT

Have kids trace their hand and cut it out. Draw a face on a paper plate. Attach hand to plate and Kleenex to hand. Can bend hand in and cover “mouth” with tissue. You can also pass out bandaids.

SONGS

WASHING YOUR HANDS SONG

        Wash, wash, wash your hands
        Wash your hands today
Rub and scrub, and scrub and rub
And germs go down the drain.

WE WASH OUR HANDS

This is the way we wash our hands,
Wash our hands, wash our hands.
This is the way we wash our hands,
So early in the morning.

(Repeat with: …Brush our teeth, …Take a bath, …Comb our hair, etc.)

FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED

Five little monkeys jumping on the bed
One fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said,
“No more monkeys jumping on the bed!”
Four little monkeys jumping on the bed…
Three little monkeys jumping on the bed…
Two little monkeys jumping on the bed…
One little monkey jumping on the bed…
No little monkeys jumping on the bed
None fell off and bumped his head
So Momma called the doctor and the doctor said,
“Put those monkeys back in bed!”

JOHN BROWN’S BABY HAD A COLD

John Brown’s baby had a cold upon his chest
John Brown’s baby had a cold upon his chest
John Brown’s baby had a cold upon his chest
And they rubbed it with camphorated oil.
