Librarian Storytime Ideas (2009)

Most of us conduct school tours at our libraries, and reading a story at the end of a primary grade tour is common. Let’s read some of our favorite stories featuring a librarian, and as a craft project, make bookmarks. This can be done both during a school tour and for preschool storytime. When I make bookmarks, I try to let the kids decorate cardstock with glitter or glue on sequins and feathers, rather than just color in a printout. Also, punch a hole at the top and they can string a ribbon through the hole to make the bookmark even fancier.

Brown, Marc. D.W.’S LIBRARY CARD.    D.W. gets her library card, and learns how to check out and renew books.

Bruss, Deborah. BOOK! BOOK! BOOK!    Animals visit the library to check out books.

Cousins, Lucy. MAISY GOES TO THE LIBRARY.    Maisy the little white mouse visits a library.

Deedy, Carmen Agra. THE LIBRARY DRAGON.    The librarian is a dragon, who learns that books are for children to read.

Gonzalez, Lucia M. THE STORYTELLER’S CANDLE.    A celebration of the librarian Pura Belpre.Sam's First Library Card

Herman, Gail. SAM’S FIRST LIBRARY CARD.    Sam loves his books so much he doesn’t want to return them to the library!

Hutchins, H.J. NICHOLAS AT THE LIBRARY.    When he finds a chimp hiding in the stacks, Nicholas helps the librarian figure out which book the chimp lives in.

Kimmel, Eric A. I TOOK MY FROG TO THE LIBRARY.    A brief, funny story about animals disrupting the library.

Knudsen, Michelle. LIBRARY LION.    Normally the lion is very quiet at the library, but he roars to call for help when the librarian falls and breaks her arm.

McQueen, Anna. LOLA AT THE LIBRARY.    Perfect for preschool groups visiting the library on a tour, Lola and her mom come to the library for storytime.

Miller, Pat. WE’RE GOING ON A BOOK HUNT.    Patterned after the song “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt,” this story teaches library etiquette.

Morris, Carla D. THE BOY WHO WAS RAISED BY LIBRARIANS.    Three librarians help Melvin find interesting books.

Numeroff, Laura. BEATRICE DOESN’T WANT TO!    Beatrice doesn’t want to go to the library, until she discovers storytime!

Pinkwater, Daniel M. AUNT LULU.    Aunt Lulu is the librarian for miners at an Alaska gold digging, bringing the books by dogsled.

Sierra, Judy. WILD ABOUT BOOKS.    Mavis the librarian visits the zoo, with a book for each animal.

Spanyol, Jessica. CARLO AND THE REALLY NICE LIBRARIAN.    Carlo the giraffe is helped by a kindly librarian.

Stadler, Alexander. BEVERLY BILLINGSLEY BORROWS A BOOK.    Beverly is afraid of what will happen to her – her library book is overdue!

Stoeke, Janet Morgan. IT’S LIBRARY DAY.    Children enjoy a visit to the library.

Thaler, Mike. THE LIBRARIAN FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.    This librarian may laminate you if you don’t watch out!

Williams, Suzanne. LIBRARY LIL.    Library Lil is so tough, she can make the local motorcycle gang read books!

Woodruff, Elvira. CAN YOU GUESS WHERE WE’RE GOING?    Grandpa takes Jack to the library.
