The 2016 summer reading theme for both the Collaborative Summer Library Program and iREAD from the Illinois Library Association (which is often used in California with materials supplied by the California Library Association), is focusing on sports and games. You can use a different sport for each week’s storytime theme, from the Olympics, to baseball or basketball, to other types of games.
Sports Day – Revised Sports Day or Field Day is a common activity at many elementary schools. It makes a great theme for an extended storytime that includes some simple games, such as a ring toss or egg and spoon race. You can also do some simple beanbag toss games, or other things appropriate for the preschool age group. For a hands-on craft, you can make simple paper pennants to cheer on your friends.

Lewis, Jan. Sports Day. Students discuss their favorite activities at Sports Day.
Rosenberg, Liz. Tyrannosaurus Dad. A little boy named Tobias brings his dad, a dinosaur, to help at Sports Day.
Tompert, Ann. Just a Little Bit. Mouse needs help from several animals to play with elephant on the seesaw.
Van Hout, Mies. Playground. A boy, girl, and cat look for the playground and are soon followed by several animals in this maze books.
