NCTE 2019 Awards Announced: The National Council of Teachers of English announced their annual children’s book awards on Nov. 16, 2018. Between the Lines: How Ernie Barnes Went from the Football Field to the Art Gallery by Sandra Neil Wallace and illustrated by Bryan Collier was named the winner of the Orbis Pictus Award for nonfiction. Five Honor books were named: Champion: The Comeback of the American Chestnut Tree by Sally M. Walker; Pass Go and Collect $200: The Story of How Monopoly Was Invented by Tanya Lee Stone; The Secret Kingdom: Nek Chand, a Changing India, and a Hidden World of Art by Barb Rosenstock; Thirty Minutes Over Oregon: A Japanese Pilot’s World War II Story by Marc Tyler Nobleman; and We Are Grateful: Otsaliheliga by Traci Sorrel.
The Charlotte Huck Award for best classroom read-aloud went to Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster by Jonathan Auxier. Five Honor books were named: Can I Touch Your Hair? by Irene Latham and Charles Waters; Everything Else in the Universe by Tracy Holczer; Ghost Boys by Jewell Parke Rhodes; Merci Suarez Changes Gears by Med Medina; and The Day War Came by Nicola Davies.
