Crystel Patterson is a Sacramento-based children’s author who focuses on positive narratives of Black people. The UC Berkeley graduate and mother of two has published four picture books in the “Inspired to Be” series, and often does library and school visits. Below are brief descriptions of Patterson’s four picture books, aimed at ages 4-8. All are written by Crystel Patterson and illustrated by Briana Young. All have full color artwork and rhyming texts.
I Am Different. (2021). $12. 978-1-956468-02-1. Three different students are made fun of at school for their “different” hair or clothing. A good story on preventing bullying.
One Flip, Two Flip, Three Flip, Four. (2021). $12. 978-1-956468-00-7. A little girl tumbles and jumps around so much her family enrolls her in gymnastics. Inspired by Gabby Douglas.
Superheroes Here and There. (2021). $12. 978-1-956468-05-2. A young Black boy loves superheroes but is told they aren’t real. Instead, he learns about real-life heroes who help people.
Too Young to What? (2022). $12. 978-1-956468-07-6. Ten real-life Black children are described, noting their accomplishments, from writing to inventing. This factual picture book will inspire children to achieve their dreams.
