The 2013 Beatty Award will be given to Barb Rosenstock for The Camping Trip That Changed America (Dial, 2012), illustrated by Mordecai Gerstein. This nonfiction picture book details the camping trip of naturalist John Muir and President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, where they explored the wilderness of Yosemite Valley. The trip is said to have had a profound impact on Roosevelt’s advocacy for national parks.
The Beatty Award will be given to Rosenstock and Gerstein at the annual California Library Association Conference on Monday, November 4, 2013, in Long Beach at CLA’S annual conference, at the Beatty Award Luncheon. The John and Patricia Beatty Award honors the author of a distinguished book for children or young adults that best promotes an awareness of California and its people.
