Strawberries Storytime Ideas (2013)

Strawberries are tasty and sweet, but also healthy, so they are great for helping preschoolers learn good eating habits. Luckily, there are some great picture books featuring strawberries! For a simple craft, make these handprint strawberry pictures. Or, for a more elaborate craft appropriate for school-age children, try this 3D mobile . Another fun project is to take a plastic strawberry basket, and weave ribbon in and out of the “grid” lines of the basket.

Bruchac, Joseph. THE FIRST STRAWBERRIES: A CHEROKEE STORY.    In this folktale, a man and woman reconcile after the Sun causes strawberries to grow.

Charles, N.N. WHAT AM I? LOOKING THROUGH SHAPES WITH APPLES AND GRAPES.    Look through the die-cut holes and listen to the rhyming clue to guess which fruit is being shown.

Degan, Bruce. JAMBERRY.    In this rhythmic story, there are all types of berries to be found.

Formento, Alison. THESE BEES COUNT!    In this counting book, bees fly over strawberries and other plants in a story depicting the honey-making process.

Honey, Elizabeth. TEN BLUE WRENS AND WHAT A LOT OF WATTLE!    In this counting book from Australia, strawberries are one of the things counted.

Litwin, Eric. PETE THE CAT: I LOVE MY WHITE SHOES.    Walking down in the street in his new white shoes, Pete steps in strawberries, blueberries, and other messes that change the color of his shoes.

Molk, Laurel. GOOD JOB, OLIVER!    Oliver wants to win the annual strawberry contest, but he is warned he is just a little bunny.

Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds. SWEET STRAWBERRIES.    A wife and her grumpy husband go to market – she wants strawberries but he says they cost too much.

Rylant, Cynthia. THE RELATIVES CAME.    When the relatives came to visit, they ate up all the strawberries but the visit was still fun.

Stevens, Janet. COOK-A-DOODLE-DOO!    The Little Red Hen’s grandson makes strawberry shortcake.

Wolff, Ashley. BABY BEAR SEES BLUE.    In this story that also includes the concept of colors, Baby Bear leaves his den and discovers red strawberries.

Wood, Audrey. THE LITTLE MOUSE, THE RED RIPE STRAWBERRY, AND THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR.    A mouse is worried the bear will steal his strawberry.
