Marvelous mixed-media illustrations capture the life of the unusual platypus. Habitat and daily habits are described. The story of a male platypus is given in large type and further information is given in a smaller type. There is also information on a female platypus and her babies. At the end is further information and an index. This is a wonderful introduction not only to this curious animal but also to the world it inhabits. The illustrations reveal distinctive details in the shaded pool, the woods and rocks and mud, and the other creatures. While photographs capture an outsider’s view, these illustrations put the reader into this world.
