Jackson, Tiffany D. Blood in the Water. Scholastic, 07/2025. 256pp. Fiction. Trade $18.99. 978-1-338-84991-2. GRADES 4–7. OUTSTANDING.
Brooklyn native Kayloni McKinnon is forced to summer on Martha’s Vineyard with her father’s mentor and finds herself entangled in a mystery when a teenage boy turns up dead at a popular swimming spot. Kayloni finds that her extensive research into how to free her father from prison translates well into skills to solve a murder. Jackson’s depiction of the emotional journey of a child of an incarcerated parent who believes in her father’s innocence is genuine and heartbreaking. All of the characters are Black, and an exploration of the rich past of Martha’s Vineyard, revealed by a history-loving side character, paints a vivid portrait of Black history on the island. Despite the ominous title, dramatic cover illustration, and suspenseful plot, author Tiffany D. Jackson’s light treatment signals a transition from her young adult literature into middle grade, and is sure to gain her an enthusiastic younger audience. A plot twist at the end satisfies.
