Bartleby the bear, like Bartleby the Scrivner, answers all requests with “I would prefer not to.” Phelan’s pencil, ink brush pen, and watercolor illustrations have a sketch-like quality, depicting a white bear who holds himself at a distance from the other animals in his class. The repeated phrase lends itself to audience participation in a storytime format. Unfortunately, although Bartleby has a positive message of self esteem and encourages children to get involved on their own timelines, there is little memorable about the art or the story.
