2013 ACL Institute - Handouts
An annotated bibliography of book titles of recommended works on California history for use with primary through eighth-graders. Included at the end of this bibliography is a list of professional resources, including books, websites and blogs, selected to help librarians and teachers locate the best materials for introducing history to children, to help them keep up with new materials as they become available, and to share ideas about selecting and using good literature for children, and with the new Common Core standards.
A list of "pairings." This list, created by Martha Shogren, models pairings of nonfiction and fiction that can help introduce children to a particular topic of history, and challenge them to explore it further.
These in depth lists comes to us from Erica Siskind of the Oakland Library, who worked with a Girl Scout troop in the fall of 2012 to create a list of historical fiction organized by time and location. She invites us all to help her further develop this list and for that reason it is available on the ACL website as Google Documents which may be edited by one and all.
A list of local storytellers, musicians, scientists and historians who specialize in bringing the times and people of the past to life. (MS Word file)
NOT YET AVAILABLE - IN DEVELOPMENT A list of local Bay Area authors whose books draw on history and may be available to discuss their work with young people.
