National Book Award Finalists Announced:

Six finalists instead of the traditional five were announced in the Young People's Literature category of the National Book Awards, on October 11, 2011. School Library Journal reports that when the nominees were announced on the "Think Out Loud" radio program, two of the judges immediately noticed one nominee was omitted and replaced with a similar-sounding title. The sixth nominee was added to correct that error, and the book named originally that was not meant to be on the list remains a nominee.

The finalists are:

  • Franny Billingsley, Chime Dial Books, an imprint of Penguin Group USA, Inc.

  • Debby Dahl Edwardson ,My Name Is Not Easy Marshall Cavendish

  • Thanhha Lai , Inside Out and Back Again Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers

  • Albert Marrin , Flesh and Blood So Cheap: The Triangle Fire and Its Legacy Alfred A. Knopf, an imprint of Random House Children's Books

  • Lauren Myracle , ShineAmulet Books, an imprint of ABRAMS

  • Gary D. Schmidt, Okay for Now Clarion Books, an imprint of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
