Pop-up and Flap Books
by Penny Peck, San Leandro Public LibraryCallery, Sean. Hide and Seek in the Jungle. Illus. by Rebecca Robinson. Kingfisher, 2010. $9.99. ISBN 9780753463925.
With board book-like pages, small cutouts, and a simple rhyming game, this should appeal to toddlers who can guess the animals pictured in each spread. After looking at the picture and reading the rhyme, a page folds open to reveal the animal. Both the animal and background foliage is painted realistically, and the last page has color photos and facts about the jungle rainforest. A great addition to storytime because the pictures can carry and the group can call out the answer.
Chancellor, Deborah. Animals Around the World. Illus. by Anthony Lewis. Kingfisher, 2010. $12.99. ISBN 9780753463932.
Very small flaps contain facts about different animals, in a book that may be better suited as a gift and not for library use. Each spread shows a habitat, including a desert, rainforest, woodland, savanna, coral reef, Arctic, and Himalayas, with small illustrations of animals and a few facts. There is no story, but a child who loves going to the zoo or wildlife center would enjoy this book.
Boisrobert, Anouck, and Rigaud, Louis. Popville.. Roaring Brook Press, 2009/2010 first U.S. edition. $16.99. ISBN 9781596435933.
In this wordless pop-up book, we first see a small red house surrounded by trees. The next page shows more houses, then a town, then finally a large city with a bridge, streetcars, and more. The art style is box-like, almost cubism, and this may not have a lot of child appeal. But architecture fans will certainly enjoy this, and teachers could use it in a unit on community. An intriguing, unusual pop-up book.
Mitton, Tony. Rumble, Roar, Dinosaur! More Prehistoric Poems With Lift-the-Flap Surprises! Illus. by Lynne Chapman. Kingfisher, 2010. $12.99. ISBN 9780753419328.
In this sequel to Gnash, Gnaw, Dinosaur!, Mitton offers six more dinosaur rhymes, accompanied by Chapman's full color cartoon-style artwork that appears to be done with pastel chalks. Each poem features a title dinosaur, such as the Stegosaurus, while each spread has a large, sturdy flap that reveals that happens to the creatures that bother the dinosaur. Most of the poems have a nice couplet rhyme pattern that is perfect for preschoolers. The endpapers offer a chart on the dinosaurs with a fact about each one, and a pronunciation guide. A fun package that should stand up to library circulation, and should pair nicely with one of Jane Yolen's dinosaur books such as How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?
