ACL on the Move:
: ACL plans to meet at the Berkeley Main Library in August, but will move back to the Oakland Main Library beginning in September. This is tentative, so look at our website for regular updates. Thanks to Berkeley for hosting the ACL meetings while Oakland was undergoing some renovations, and thanks to Oakland for allowing us to return there for our meetings.
Nina Lindsay in this month's SLJ:
ACL member and supervising librarian for youth services at Oakland PL has a great article in the July 2009 School Library Journal. She interviews K.T. Horning, who was recently named as the 2010 May Hill Arbuthnot Lecturer.
Aliki donates art to the Arne Nixon Center:
Picture book author/artist Aliki has donated 21 pieces of original art to the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children's Literature at California State University, Fresno. Aliki's colorful illustrations feature dozens of charming and playful cats, plus a few birds and mice, too, as only Aliki can portray them-writing, painting, working, and reading, reading, and reading some more. The cats, born in Aliki's London studio, now have an American address at www.arnenixoncenter.org. After designing the illustrations, Aliki donated the actual art: charming multimedia pictures, on paper, done in pen and ink, colored crayons, markers, and watercolor pens- "whatever I needed," she explained, "to keep the sketches free." Aliki, who has written and/or illustrated more than 200 books, worked on the cat pictures between other projects, including her forthcoming picture book, Push Button. This features a little boy, based on her toddler grandson, who loves to push buttons. When his finger gets tired, he finds another way to amuse himself (hint: it involves books). For additional information, contact the Center's curator, Angelica Carpenter, at (559) 278-8116 or send email to angelica@csufresno.edu .

The "Warriors" series by Erin Hunter is quite popular with tweens - mainly those in grades 4-7. Hunter is actually three people - three British authors: Kate Cary, Cherith Baldrey, and Victoria Holmes. They come in several series, and even some graphic novels, all featuring talking cats. Other great "talking animal" books that the PUBYAC Listserv recommends to "Warriors" fans include:
