Peter Sis: Sunday, October 14, 2007 San Francisco Main Library, 2:00 pm
Peter Sís, a MacArthur fellow and internationally renowned artist discusses his memoir, THE WALL: GROWING UP BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN. The Communist Czechoslovakia of Mr. Sís's youth was a place where creativity could be discouraged but not easily killed. Graphic art, journal entries, and personal photographs illustrate the harsh realities of a closed society and the inevitable longing for freedom. Václav Havel, the former president of the Czech Republic, says, "Peter Sís's book is most of all about the will to live one's life in freedom and should be required reading for all those who take their freedom for granted." College students (undergrad and grad), teachers, librarians, and young adults interested in art, politics, and Eastern European history are welcome. (Not suitable for children).
Sponsored by the University of San Francisco, the San Francisco Public Library and the San Mateo Reading Association.

OBITUARY: MADELEINE L'ENGLE

Newbery Medalist Madeleine L'Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, died on Sept. 6, 2007 at the age of 88. It is considered the first science fiction book to be a Newbery winner; four sequels followed. Meet the Austins kicked off another series which was nearly as popular, the 4th installment, A Ring of Endless Light, was a Newbery Honor book. The Smith College graduate and Manhattan native was a stage actress before she was a novelist. Her husband Hugh Franklin was also a stage actor, who later became famous as Dr. Charles Tyler on the TV soap opera "All My Children." Franklin died in 1986, their son Bion died in 1999. L'Engle is survivied by her daughters Josephine and Maria.

Reissues - Worth Buying?

Lionni, Leo. NICOLAS, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?. Knopf, 1987, 2007. $16.99, ISBN 9780375844509
In this anti-war story, a mouse Nicolas is carried off by a bird, but returns to tell his fellow mice of the bird's kindness. Originally written during the first Gulf War, it's back to help kids understand that hate, war, and prejudice are wrong. Out of print for the last ten years, this timely reissue looks as fresh and new as a debut book. Lionni's signature cut paper collage illustrations are set on stark white backgrounds. One dramatic illustration shows mice killing a bird with a pointed stake, complete with blood. Pair with Dr. Seuss's The Butter Battle Book.

Duvoisin, Roger. DONKEY-DONKEY. Knopf, 1940, 2007. $15.99. ISBN 9780375840654.
The theme of self-esteem comes through clearly in this farm tale about a donkey who thinks his ears stick up too much. He tries wearing his ears to the side, and out in front, but this causes accidents. Fans of Duvoisin's farm animals, well-known to readers of the " Petunia" books, will find this a timely tale with full color illustrations. Out of print for 25 years, large main libraries will want this to complete their collections.

Knight, Hilary. THE CIRCUS IS COMING ... A PICTURE PARADE. Random House, 1978, 2007. $15.99. ISBN 9780375840661.
Best known for illustrating Kay Thompson's "Eloise" books, Knight's salute to the circus has been revised and reissued after being out of print for more than 20 years. The full color, almost Peter Max-like psychedelic illustrations depict a diverse group of children and circus performers in fanciful dress. The new edition has a section saluting South America, and an afterword by Paul Binder, founder of the Big Apple Circus. The brief text runs along the bottom of each spread, set on a gray border. At the back of the book is a list of things for readers to look at in each illustration.

Great Websites for Children's Librarians

Recently, Jenny Sullivan of the Greenville Public Library in Ohio sent the listserv PUBYAC a list of “Great websites for children's librarians.” I found it really useful and worth including here for more people to see, and to bookmark. Many of these sites are helpful for programming, storytime, readers advisory, and more (and thanks, Jenny, for including BayViews.org in your original list). Her original post has been edited for space.
