Upcoming Events for Children's Librarians

NEWS AND NOTES

ACL's Meeting Time Changed: ACL's monthly meetings, held the second Thursday each month at the Berkeley Main Library, will now begin at 9:30am instead of 9:00am. Please note this does not include special events like the ACL Institute.

ACL Needs New Book Review Chair
Monthly tasks of Book Review Co-Chair- Store preview copies of books as they are received from publishers (requires about six to eight large shelves). Unpack, stamp, and sort books. Assign approximately 125 books to 42 reviewers. Identify series and other books worth reviewing as "extras" that people will choose at the meeting. Finish assigning books several days before the ACL meeting day, so that the other co-chair can type the book data. Arrive early on the meeting day, bringing the "extras" and the received-not-reviewed books for the book sale. Help set up the meeting room and the book sale. Facilitate the book-reviewing portion of the ACL meeting. Maintain a file of checklists indicating reviewers' preferences and areas of expertise. Note books that have received starred reviews in other professional reviewing sources, and try to ensure that those books are reviewed promptly when ACL receives them.

Sydney Taylor Book Award Winners 2003 Announced by Association of Jewish Libraries

The Sydney Taylor Book Award is given annually to outstanding children's books of Jewish content. It is sponsored by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) and is named in honor of the late Sydney Taylor, author of the classic All-of-a-Kind Family books about a Jewish immigrant family at the turn of the 20th century. For more information, visit the Association of Jewish Libraries' website at www.jewishlibraries.org.

Younger Readers Winner:

Bagels From Benny (BeeWee 1413190669 $18.98, TR 1553374177 $15.95 list), by Aubrey Davis, illustrated by Dusan Petricic.

This story of a little boy who tries to thank God for the wonderful bagels his grandpa bakes is based on a rich tradition of tales about the performance of mitzvot or good deeds. Lively illustrations, colored mainly in shades of warmly baked brown, enhance this fresh expression of Jewish values.

Honor Books for Younger Readers:

Chanukah On the Prairie (TR 080740814X $13.95 list) by Burt Schuman, illustrated by Rosalind Charney Kaye, is a story about immigrants who make their way to a real Jewish community in North Dakota around the turn of the 20th century.

The Moses Basket (BeeWee 1415510717 $18.98, TR 0802852513 $16.99 list) by Jenny Koralek, illustrated by Pauline Baynes features Moses's mother and sister, Miriam, as brave and resourceful main characters.
An adaptation of a Sholem Aleichem story entitled When the Chickens Went On Strike: A Rosh Hashanah Tale (BeeWee 1413123384 $18.52, TR 0525468625 $15.99 list), written by Erica Silverman and illustrated by Matthew Trueman, casts a wise and witty glance at the meaning of repentance.

Older Readers Winner:

Who Was the Woman Who Wore the Hat? (BeeWee 1413132618 $17.74, TR 0525469990 $14.99 list) by Nancy Patz

An unknown woman's hat, on display in Amsterdam's Jewish Historical Museum, inspired this spare and powerful reflection on identity, memory, life, and death.

Honor Books for Older Readers:

Marion Broida's The Ancient Israelites and Their Neighbors uses archaeological discoveries and biblical scholarship to give children a taste of the food, crafts, and cultures of the Israelites, Philistines, and Phoenicians.
Tough Questions Jews Ask: A Young Adult's Guide to Building a Jewish Life by Rabbi Edward Feinstein puts Jewish commitment into a framework of young people's spiritual development.

Birdland by Tracy Mack places a moving story about a grieving family in a hip urban setting, filled with jazz, action and diversity.

New Readers' Theatre Book by Aaron Shepard

Shepard, Aaron. Folktales on Stage: Scripts for Reader's Theatre. Shepard Publications, 2004. $15.00, ISBN 0-938497-20-0.

In this follow-up to Stories on Stage, (Wilson, 1993), Shepard presents 16 Readers' Theatre scripts that he adapted from his own folktale retellings. Many of these scripts are also available on his website, www.aaronshep.com/rt, but it is very handy to have them all together. The introduction gives some tips on using Readers' Theatre to promote reading, and how to change scripts for more or fewer actors, staging, etc. He makes Readers' Theatre so simple that even the most inexperienced will be able to perform these stories.

Shepard's website has a list of his books, some scripts that are free to print out and use, and information about his visits to schools and libraries. Each script is adapted by Shepard from his folktale retellings, published previously as either picture books or in children's magazines. He includes a brief source note for each script, and his picture books contain more extensive source notes if you need them. He also includes pronunciation keys, especially for names, with the scripts.

The folktales represent cultures from around the world. For example, "The Crystal Heart" is from Vietnam, "The Enchanted Storks" is from Iraq, "Master Man" is from Nigeria, and "The Princess Mouse" is from Finland. Most of the scripts can be performed at 10 minute skits, just right for school assemblies.
